Types of Psychotherapy

CBT:

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is structured and involves active participation from the client. The theory is that our belief system and biases lead to negative thoughts which may be triggered and could be automatic. These thoughts could follow patterns of thinking which are unhelpful. Negative thoughts would cause negative feelings and influence the behaviour. To change one’s behaviour, hence, one needs to challenge, reframe and restructure thought patterns.

EFT:

Emotional awareness allows better understanding of how people behave in individual or interpersonal lives. EFT works well with couples as it focuses on the attachment pattern, injuries and emotional needs not met.The focus is on building better connection, communication and empathy.

Person Centered Therapies:

In this therapeutic model, the client is the ‘driver’ of therapy. The focus is on self awareness and ability for self growth. The therapist’s role is supportive, reflective and allows self actualization.

Solution Focussed Therapy:

This therapy is focussed on personal strengths, experiences and resources. It is present/ future oriented and delves into solutions rather than problems. There is a goal oriented approach.

Existential Therapy:

This therapy explores purpose and responsibility. It questions some basic beliefs about life, death, freedom, free will, choice and consequences of one’s actions.

Gestalt Therapy:

Gestalt therapy focusses on the ‘here and now.’ How emotions are affected by past memories or experiences. Looking at the ‘whole’ picture of one’s life allows one to break free of what one thinks it is like or how it should be.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy:

Difficult beliefs, emotions and thoughts need to be accepted for a person to stop struggling with feeling one way and wanting to feel the other. Once we accept ourselves for who we are, only then can we change, aligned with our beliefs and wants.

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy:

DBT is big on mindfulness and acceptance. Many people facing invalidation grow up angry and believing that they could never be good enough. Emotional regulation, accepting self and distress tolerance are big parts of therapy. It has had success with borderline personality disorder. Can be done in individual or group settings.

Narrative Therapy:

This is a therapy believing that people have been telling stories about themselves and their lives, which affect their happiness. If we could separate issues from people and then work on them, a lot of ‘labelling’ would be gotten rid of. If allowed, narratives CAN change and people can rewrite ‘their story’ based on realistic expectations and desires.

Motivational Interviewing:

Collaborative and goal oriented style of therapy which works with evocation and exploration of motives and reasons for change, resolving ambivalence and strengthening change talk. It is used successfully in addictions and substance abuse. Client’s autonomy and self direction are important in this therapeutic style.
